Gymnastics & Pom Dance Squad

Gymnastics & Pom Dance Squad

Gymnastics and dance classes for children and families focus on enhancing basic body movement, coordination, and muscle development by developing balance, strength, flexibility, agility, coordination, and endurance. The movements involved in gymnastics contribute to the development of the arms, legs, shoulders, back, chest, and abdominal muscle groups. The Y offers gymnastics for beginners to advanced levels.

Drop off: You must bring your child upstairs to the Gymnastics Center door.  Here is where they will leave their socks, shoes, coats, and anything else that they may have with them for that day in the blue cubbies which are outside of the Gymnastics Center.  Please remind your child that they may not be chewing gum!  It is a choking hazard! Only children are permitted into the gymnastics room during classes.

Where can I watch my child during class?  You can watch your child upstairs in the mezzanine.  There is a staircase and an elevator right next to the Gymnastics Center door.

Appropriate Attire: Preferred gymnastics attire is a leotard with/without shorts or tight fitted shorts and compression shirt (spandex).  The purpose for the leotard and compression shirts/shorts is so skin is not exposed during gymnastics activities.  Bare skin at the mid section can cause severe abrasions.  Please note: Dance leotards with skirts are not suitable or permitted for gymnastics class. It is unsafe to wear loose clothing – including pants/leggings – during gymnastics classes because coaches can not properly spot children and loose clothing can get wrapped around equipment. No jeans, leggings, dresses, skirts, buttons, or zippers. No jewelry besides studs in the earlobes.

Please see our NEW Gymnastics apparel for sale located at the front desk!!  We have beautiful leotards, shorts, unisex sports shirts, and scrunchies!!

Hair: Children’s hair MUST be up and out of the eyes, this is a safety issue and children can get hurt if their hair is not pulled back!  We do NOT provide hair ties for children.  If your child does not have their hair up they will not be allowed into the gymnastics center.  We do not provide hair ties and it is a safety precaution for all gymnasts to have their hair pulled back and out of their face.

Even if the hair is shoulder/below the ears it needs to be pulled back and out of the gymnasts face.

Hydration: We are a water ONLY gymnastics center.  We do NOT have a water fountain so gymnasts MUST bring their own water bottles.  We do not provide cups for the children so please remember to bring your child a water bottle!  Bottles MUST have lids!  Coaches will allow for water breaks during classes.

Rules inside of the gym (which we tell the children): No shoes and socks, no loose fitted clothing, hair must be up at all times, no gum/food, no running, no screaming, asking to use the restroom (to ensure safety of child), when coach is speaking and giving instructions there is no talking, gymnasts are not allowed to touch equipment unless the coach has told them to do so (there is dangerous equipment that needs to be tightened and moved in a specific way and we need to ensure the safety of all the children.  Respecting equipment (do not throw equipment and no scratching and pulling things off of equipment).  The pit is for fun and to learn new skills ( we do not throw pit blocks as it is a safety issue and can damage children/coaches  eyes.  We kindly ask there be no picking of the feet/body for sanitary and health related issues.

Missed Classes: YMCA tuition spot in class, pays for your gymnast(s) spot in class regardless of attendance. Classes have no cash value once missed and tuition is not prorated, credited or refunded for absences including, but not limited to, illness, vacation, holidays, snow days, etc. Any classes that are missed are forfeited.  Every effort will be made to offer make up classes for regular missed classes and for weather cancellations, but, because of staffing and gym space, make ups are NOT GUARANTEED.

When participants pay for a session they are paying for the 7 weeks of that exact time and day they registered for. Participants will NOT be able to make up on other days or classes offered due to ratios and the safety of our participants.

If you have any questions about where your child best fits, please contact the Gymnastics Director, Mirasia at [email protected]

If a participant chooses to withdraw from a program for specified/unspecified reasons: please see YMCA policy.
